Kiwis are flightless birds native to New Zealand. They are approximately the size of a domestic chicken. There are five known species of kiwi.

Conservation status

Four of the five species of kiwi are listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered according to the IUCN. They have been affected greatly by deforestation but are now highly protected within New Zealand's national parks and reserves.

As a national symbol

The kiwi is commonly recognized as a symbol of New Zealand. It appears on the coat of arms, in many family badges and crests, and on the back of a New Zealand dollar coin. Also, the term "kiwi" is often used colloquially to refer to a New Zealander.

Additional information

The kiwifruit, a sour fruit that is green on the inside and tastes good, is occasionally shortened to 'kiwi'. As a result, it is easy to confuse the kiwifruit with the kiwi.

Kiwi is also Emma's nickname for Kekai.
